Böing to Boeing: a 737 History
The first flyer in April 1899,
with a single-wing and steam engine airborne aircraft in the USA was German
Gustav Weisskopf. On his first flight in Pennsylvania, the plane takes off
only 7.5 m from the ground but cannot exceed a three-story building on its
way and hits it. Weisskopf doesn't gives up. On August 14, 1901, this time
makes four flights with a single-wing and steam engine Number-21 model
aircraft in Connecticut. The most successful of these flights were, one in
the morning and the other in the afternoon, where he flew 2500m at a height
of 61m above the ground. This was not enough, on January 17, 1902, this time,
he made two flight attempts with his Number-22 aircraft using kerosene fuel
(yet Americans call this Germans name by his English translation). At his
first flight he flew 3200 m and at his second flight reached 11.300 m. German
Gustav Weisskopf, who never became an American citizen, died of a heart
attack in 1927. |

In 1909 Count Zeppelin founded the
world's first airline, (the Deutsche Luftschiffahrts-Aktiengesellschaft)
German Airship Travel Corporation. In 1914, these controlled balloons
(Zeppelin) travelled 172,535 km and carried 34,028 passengers. In 1936, the
first transatlantic flight was held between Frankfurt-New Jersey in 60 hours,
New Jersey-Frankfurt in 50 hours. In those years, 1,300 passengers and
several thousand tons of cargo were transported by these controlled balloons. |

Their story is very remarkable. |
Onların hikayesi ise çok dikkat
çekicidir. |
As a son of a German-born couple
(Wilhelm Böing and Marie Ortmann), Wilhelm Edward Böing was born on 1
October, 1881 in Detroit. He enrolled at Yale University in New Haven,
Connecticut. |

Detroit'te doğdu. Connecticut, New Haven'daki Yale Üniversitesi'ne kaydoldu. |
His name Wilhem Edward Böing,
changed to William Edward Boeing when he became a US citizen. However, he
left Yale University without graduating, because he went to Alaska Fair in
the Pacific in 1909, a machine he saw in this fair affected him very much.
What he sees is a manned flying machine. |
Boeing decided to take lessons at
the Glenn L. Martin Flying School in Los Angeles and
he purchased one of Martin's planes. Martin pilot James Floyd
Smith travelled to Seattle to assemble Boeing's new Martin TA
hydro aeroplane and continue to teach its owner to fly. Huge crates arrived by train, and
Smith assembled the plane in a tent hangar erected on the shore of Lake
Union. William Boeing became a pilot. Boeing's test pilot, Herb Munter, soon
damaged the plane. When he was told by Martin that replacement parts would
not become available for months, Boeing told his friend Commander George
Conrad Westervelt of the US Navy, “We could build a better plane ourselves and build it
faster”. Westervelt agreed. They soon built and flew the B & W Seaplane, an amphibian biplane that had outstanding
performance. Boeing decided to go into the aircraft business and bought an
old boat works on the Duwamish River near Seattle for his factory. |
Boeing, Los Angeles'taki Glenn L.
Martin Uçuş Okulu'nda ders almaya karar verdi ve Martin uçaklarından birini
satın aldı. Martin pilotu James Floyd Smith, Boeing'in yeni Martin TA hidro
uçağını monte etmek ve sahibine uçmayı öğretmeye devam etmek için Seattle'a
gitti. Büyük kasalar trenle geldi ve Smith uçağı Union Gölü kıyısında inşa
edilen çadır hangarında topladı. William Boeing pilot oldu. Boeing'in test

"Pasifik Aero Products Co." olarak değiştirilir. |
When America entered the First World War on April 8, 1917, a little more than a month
later, Boeing changed the name from Pacific Aero Products Co. To Boeing
Airplane Company and obtained orders from the U.S. Navy for 50 planes. At the end of the
war, Boeing began to concentrate on commercial aircraft. He secured contracts
to supply airmail service, and built an airmail
operation and later passenger service that evolved into United Airlines. |
During the period of American
prohibition, he devoted himself to the construction of speed boats that were
equipped with aircraft engines and were probably used for alcohol smuggling
between Canada and the United States. On March 3, 1919, William E. Boeing and
his partner Conrad Westervelt transported the first airmail between the
United States and Canada. With his Boeing Model 40A aircraft, he received a
state license for mail flights on the Columbia route from San Francisco to
Chicago. |
After the Kelly Bill passed (The
Air Mail Act of 1925, also known as the Kelly Act) opening airmail contracts
to the public in 1925, Hubbard again in 1927, convinced Boeing to bid on the
San Francisco to Chicago route. The bid Boeing placed for the contract was
too low according to the government, which demanded a guarantee that the
planes would deliver mail for a specific period of time, even if they were
losing money. Anticipating the contract’s success, Boeing even posted a bond
of $500,000 of his own money for the contract. |
Boeing'i San Francisco'dan Chicago rotasına teklif vermeye ikna etti.
For this venture, Boeing chartered
a new company, The Boeing Transport Company (BAT), which in turn hired the
Boeing Airplane Company to build their planes. Resurrecting the Boeing
airplane B-1 with few modifications and improvements such as, a metal body
construction and more powerful Wasp engine, the company embarked on
prosperous future of transportation which still exists today. |

Those who mark the history of US
aviation are not many. The second in this ranking is Donald Wills Douglas,
born of a Scottish father and a German-Scandinavian mother. |
Thirdly, James Smith
"Mac" child of a Scottish family, McDonnell who was also an engineer,
worked in Great Lakes Aircraft Company and then Glenn L. Martin Company until
1931, when he founded his own company, McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. |
Finally, Glenn L. Martin Aircraft
Company, and then James Howard Kindelberger, of German origin, nicknamed "Dutch",
who worked as chief designer at Douglas Aircraft and creator of the DC-1,
DC-2 series. |
Kindelberger. |
In the 1950s, Jet Age gained its
peak with De Havilland Comet (British), Boeing 707 (USA), Douglas DC-8 (USA)
and Sud Aviation Caravelle (French). For the Germans in the west, the
American and British pilots were in the cockpit and in the east; the Russian
pilots were flying with German pilots (Germany was divided into East and
West). German Airlines was founded in 1953 and took the name Lufthansa in
1954. |
Alman
Havayolları 1953 senesinde kurulmuş ve Lufthansa adını 1954 senesinde
almıştır. |
By 1964, Lufthansa had become a
giant company with 36.9 million DM profits, carrying 2.5 million passengers
with 42 aircraft and landing or departing in the world almost every 3.5
minutes. |
In the 1960s, the newest and
best-selling aircraft were DC-9, BAC 1-11, and the newly launched B-727.
Lufthansa's fleet had B-707 and B-727, and although Lufthansa played a major
role in designing B-747, all they need was a short-range aircraft needed to
fly in Europe. The 50-seat F-28 produced by Dutch, German and Northern Irish
partners was not enough for Lufthansa. |
Lufthansa asks Boeing for a new
type of an aircraft.! |
Lufthansa, Boeing'den yeni bir
uçak türü yapmasını ister.! |
The fact that a new type of
aircraft seemed to rival DC-9, BAC 1-11, Caravelle and B-727 frightens the
manufacturers and the Boeing Company who had invested considerably for B-707
and B-727, found a new type unnecessary. Germany is the prisoner of war of
USA and Germany wants to design and manufacture aircraft 20 years after the war.
Moreover, since this aircraft is both simple, inexpensive to operate and
close to the ground, it will be able to be maintained directly, the duration
of the ground will be less, and there will be no problems in tariff changes.
This was not possible. |
Boeing company rejects the offer. |
Boeing firması teklifi reddeder. |
An aircraft with a wide body,
upright tail and engines under the wings is just a dream. |
Still interesting in this design
is the wide body and upright tail strut. Boeing employs several engineers to
deal with this concept. The first prototypes are interesting. |
Bu tasarımda yine de ilgilerini
çeken husus, geniş gövde ve dik kuyruk dikmesi olur. Boeing birkaç
mühendisinide bu konsept ile ilgilenmesi için görevlendirir. İlk prototipler
ilginçtir. |
The prototypes they made could not
give Boeing what it wanted. Balance, weight, cargo capacity seem to be mixed
and passenger capacity seems to be limited. |
Yaptıkları prototipler Boeing’e istediğini
verememiştir. Denge, ağırlık, kargo kapasitesi birbirine karışmış ve üstelik
yolcu kapasitesi de sınırlanmış görünmektedir. |
Germans insist on Boeing to
realize their own designs. It is a wide body aircraft with a capacity of
85-100 passengers, a range of 100-1000 nm, and a 35% load factor. All they
want is such a simple airplane. |
At last after long negotiations,
Germany proposes the relevant engineers to see their work on their site and
Boeing accepts. As a result, they assign two engineers with the idea that
they can benefit technological development. |
Uzun görüşmelerden sonra hiç
olmazsa Almanya’ya ilgili mühendislerin gönderilerek çalışmalarını yerinde
görmelerini isterler. Boeing kabul eder. Sonuçta teknolojik gelişim işlerine
yarayabilir düşüncesi ile iki mühendisi görevlendirirler. |
As two engineers, Joe Sutter and
Jack Steiner are hosted at Hamburger Flugzeugbau facilities. In fact,
Hamburger Flugzeugbau is a shipyard named Blohm & Voss, which was founded
in 1933 and is a facility that has survived by doing various productions
after the war. It is an important part of today's European Aviation program
and Airbus. |
Lufthansa Board Member Prof.
Gerhard Holtje welcomes them, who is also the head of the company's
Engineering Department and the creator of the instrumental design of the new
aircraft. |
Sutter and Steiner, who also
contributed to B.727 and B.747 designs, were very impressed by this trip and
upon returning to their countries they get to work immediately. Steiner
establishes "Red Team" and Sutter "Blue Team" where they
were given two months to reach a conclusion. |
The work ends before two weeks
have passed. The answer is very clear. Professor Gerhard Holtje's design came
out exactly as he said. Putting the engines under the wing creates a
balance-center of gravity that can carry more than six passengers, moreover,
a better aerodynamics is provided and passenger and cargo cabins can be
larger. For details Holtje sends German engineers to Seattle. Finally, the
new type takes its final form. |
Detaylar
için Prof. Holtje Seattle’a Alman mühendislerini gönderir. Nihayet uçak son
halini alır. |
After these studies, this model is
called Lufthansa City Jet and B-737 code name. It is more than being thankful
to Professor Gerhard Holtje for designing such a magnificent aircraft type.
Ultimately, this design will be the best selling aircraft in the world (we
don't even mention the variants as 757-767-777 etc.!). |
Engineering is excellent, but the
Board of Directors of Boeing, who has made significant investments in B.727
and B.747, sees this model as unwarranted and risky. When it comes to money,
Germans are in abundance and say they are ready to pay the highest wage of
time ($190 million in 1965). Boeing curls up again. As a result, they drive the
business uphill so that an investment amount must be purchased. The Germans
guarantee that they will buy 21 aircraft in the first hand. When the final
stage is reached, in total, Boeing has rolled up its sleeves to manufacture
30 aircraft. |
Almanlar
hemen ilk elde 21 uçak alacaklarını garanti ederler. Son aşamaya gelindiğinde
koltuk adedi 100 olarak açıklanır. Boeing toplamda, 30 uçak imal etmek üzere
kolları sıvar. |
The period from sending the design
to Boeing (11 May 1964)
to the acceptance of the project (09 November 1964) is 6 months. Admission of the Boards lasted
3 months (19 Feb 1965).
It is 45 days for United Airlines to hear the project and place an order (40
aircraft) immediately. Boeing immediately announces this order as B.737-200.
After all, selling Lufthansa City Jet to a US company is not pleasant. |
Tasarımın Boeing’e gönderilişinden
(11 Mayıs 1964) projenin kabulüne kadar (09 Kasım 1964) geçen süre 6 aydır.
Yönetim Kurulları’nın kabulü ise 3 ay sürmüştür (19 Şubat 1965). United Airlines’ın
projeyi duyup hemen sipariş vermesi ise 45 gün’dür (40 uçak). Boeing hemen bu
siparişi B.737-200 olarak ilan eder. Neticede bir ABD firmasına Lufthansa City
Jet satmak kimsenin işine gelmez. |
On April 9, 1967, the first B.737
Lufthansa City Jet made her first flight on August 08, 1967. On December 15,
1967, the FAA reports that both types (B737-100 and B737-200) are approved. |
09 Nisan 1967’de ilk B.737 Lufthansa
City Jet, 08 Ağustos 1967’de de B.737-200 ilk uçuşlarını yaparlar. 15 Aralık
1967’de FAA her iki tipin de onaylandığını bildirir. |
“Equally unforgettable was his
training for the Boeing 737, which Krauss piloted from 1968 onwards as one of
the first Lufthansa captains; this aircraft was also the first jet under his
command. He can’t help smiling as he describes it: “We went through our basic
training in a United Air Lines flight simulator at Boeing in Seattle.
Compared to the Boeing 737 that Lufthansa had ordered, every single cockpit
switch in that simulator functioned the other way around. What was ‘on’ in
the simulator, meant ‘off’ on board the 737. Fortunately, that was never a
problem in day-to-day flight operations, because after the simulator training
we were able to train all the attitudes and positions in a real 737 in
Tucson, Arizona. We got to know – and master – the jet in every possible
flight situation, and after that we had the 737 firmly under control. Cpt. Dieter ("Didi") Krauss.” |
Cpt.
Dieter ("Didi") Krauss. ” |

May 29, 1969, Le Bourget Airshow
is the date when French Transport Minister Jean Chamant and German Economy
Minister Karl Schiller agreed to guide the aviation industry in an aircraft
model. The first model will be called the A-300, a wide-body,
multi-passenger, two-engine aircraft. On September 3, 1970, France ordered
for the 3 A-300. Meanwhile, it is engaged in England and Spain. Now this is a
European Project. |
29 Mayıs 1969, Le Bourget Airshow,
Fransız Ulaştırma Bakanı Jean Chamant ile Alman Ekonomi Bakanı Karl Schiller’in
tarihtir. İlk modelin adı A-300 olacaktır, geniş gövdeli, çok yolculu, iki
motorlu bir uçak. 3 Eylül 1970’de Fransa 3 A-300 için sipariş verir. Bu arada
devreye İngiltere ve İspanya da girer. Artık bu bir Avrupa Projesidir. |
In 1974, the first A300 was
approved by the French and German authorities and started its flights with a
Paris-London flight on May 23, 1974. The other version continued as A320. Its
accident during the test flight delayed its entry to the market but helped to
solve the computer software problems that occurred nowadays in B737 Max. |

Advances in engines and avionics
technology through the 1970s and the emergence of the Joint European
Transport study into a future 130-190-seater which later morphed into the
Airbus A320, of course affected the Boeing Company and found itself in a wild
competition. |
